HOW TO MAKE CRESCENT ROLLS, STEP BY STEP:

  1. In a small bowl add the water, 1 teaspoon of the sugar, and the yeast. Stir to combine and let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is bubbly and activated.
  2. In the body of a stand mixer with the hook attachment, add the remaining sugar, ½ cup of the butter cut into tablespoons, milk, egg, and salt, stir to combine.
  3. Once activated, add the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  4. Add 3 cups of the flour, and stir it in. Mix on medium speed until the dough starts to clean the sides of the bowl. If the dough is too sticky, start adding up to 1 more cup of flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough cleans the sides of the bowl.
  5. Knead the dough on medium-high speed for 7 minutes, until a soft, smooth dough is formed.
  6. Spray a large bowl with cooking spray, add the dough and roll it around so it is covered in the spray. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it double in size in a warm, dry place, 60-90 minutes.
  7. Line a large sheet tray with parchment paper, set aside.
  8. Once doubled, punch down the dough to release the air bubbles.
  9. Divide the dough into 2 even balls. Roll out one ball at a time into a 12-inch circle.
  10. Using a pizza cutter, cut into 12 even wedges/triangles.
  11. Using the remaining ¼ cup of softened butter, smear a little bit of it onto each wedge.
  12. Starting at the larger end of the triangle, tightly roll into a crescent shape. Place the rolls onto the prepared sheet tray. Repeat with the remaining dough ball.
  13. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and allow to double again for 60-90 minutes.
  14. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and puffed up.
  15. Immediately brush with the melted butter and serve.

CAN I HALVE THE RECIPE?

Yes, this recipe makes quite a bit of Crescent Rolls- 24 in fact! If you need less, you can halve the recipe to make 12 rolls.

Additionally, if you need more for a gathering, you can double the recipe, just make sure you have another sheet pan to bake them on.

CAN I ADD ANYTHING TO THESE?

Oh my goodness, yes! And they’ll be so delicious, I have so many options that you can make, to make cheesy Crescent Rolls simply add some shredded cheese (I suggest cheddar) right into the dough.

Want a bit of spice? Add in some chopped up jalapenos, or you can use canned jalapenos as well. This is a great addition for those spice lovers out there.

Lastly, garlic – one of my favorites. You can make these into garlic rolls.

Add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and a 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning into the melted butter so you can flavor them appropriately at the end when you brush on the butter.

HOW LONG DO I NEED TO LET THESE RISE?

The only downside about homemade bread is the process, but once you get used to working with yeast, you’ll learn to love it. These need to rise for a total of 3 hours.

Which makes them the perfect candidate for a make ahead dish to bring to your gatherings!
