“Santa, don’t forget the Grinch. I know he’s mean and hairy and smelly, and his hands are cold and clammy, but I think he’s kinda… sweet.” — Cindy Lou Who.

If Cindy Lou Who is able to see the good in the mean old Grinch, I think we can too! He’s a character we all love to hate and becomes somewhat of hero by the end of the story.

To make our Grinch cookie baking process easier, we start with a box of cake mix. You can opt to make your cookies from scratch instead and in that case I would recommend our Not Too Sweet Sugar Cookies Recipe.

If you’re starting with the scratch cookie recipe, then just pick up with the recipe below at the point where the green food coloring is added and follow along from there.

If choose to make your Grinch cookie recipe with a cake mix, I recommend using a white cake mix (rather than a yellow cake mix) so the batter will tint a better green than some yellow cake mixes that add a bit of color to them.

Things You’ll Need

They key to making these Grinch-themed cookies is the red heart! For the heart we use red heart shaped sprinkles.

While these are usually considered to be a decoration for Valentine baking, luckily they are available all year round. If you can’t find them at your store you can also order them here.

Why Do People Use a Red Heart for Grinch Recipes?

As the classic story goes, the main character, The Grinch, has a heart that is two sizes too small. Only after he meets Cindy Lou Who does his attitude toward Christmas and toward humanity slowly begin to change and then his heart grows by three sizes!

This of course is where that iconic decoration that is almost always seen in a Grinch recipe or decorative craft – or basically anything Grinch – comes from!

Grinch Cookies with Hershey Kisses

For an alternative Grinch cookie, remove cookies from oven one minute before they’re done baking. Place a Peppermint Hershey Kiss on top of each cookie and return to the oven for one minute.

The peppermint Kisses have a fun red and white striped pattern that are very reminiscent of Whoville!
