Jurgen Klopp will reunite with some familiar faces just weeks after leaving Liverpool having been invited to the Champions League final. Klopp's old club Borussia Dortmund take on Real Madrid under the iconic Wembley arch, 11 years after the German himself managed the Black and Yellows in a European Cup final at the same stadium.

They lost that match 1-0 against bitter rivals Bayern Munich and this will be their first Champions League final since. And like last time, Klopp will be present, but in the stands this time instead of on the touchline.

He is likely to run into some familiar friends including Edin Terzic's assistant managers Sven Bender and Nuri Sahin, both of whom played under him at Dortmund, while sporting director Sebastian Kehl was his captain for seven years. Scout Sven Mislintat was also there when Klopp was in charge, just as Terzic was, with the 44-year-old now the head coach of his boyhood club.

Hans-Joachim Watzke remains CEO and suggested back in 2021 the door is always open for Klopp to return to the Bundesliga giants in some capacity. He said: "He can come back when he wants, but not as a coach. If at any time he had the feeling that he would like to return to us, all the doors are open.

"We talk often and I don't think he wants to be a manager forever. But if at any point he says: 'When I have finished my coaching career I would like to do something more at the club.'"

And asked about his plans after his final Liverpool match against Wolves tomorrow (Sunday 4pm), Klopp explained: "I actually don't know. I have got an invitation now for the Champions League final. They said 'I don't think he will come' but of course I will come, it's the Champions League final and I have nothing to do really!

"That's one thing, besides that we didn't plan anything. At the Euros we will watch games and have tickets for a few games. Being in Germany for a long time, meeting friends, nothing spectacular.

"Just easy-going, not planning a pre-season, I will definitely not do that, and not being involved in any transfer talks, which is such a difference. I'm really looking forward to it. But no real plans."

Only two players are still at Dortmund who were members of Klopp's squad in his final campaign - 2015-16 - at the Westfalenstadion. One is Mats Hummels who left for Bayern Munich the same summer the manager departed to take a sabbatical.

Hummels, 35, has been back at Dortmund since 2019 but will not captain the side at Wembley. Instead that honour will fall to one of Klopp's former Liverpool players - Emre Can. Now 30 and a centre-back, Can left Liverpool in 2018 to join Juventus.

After 18 months he joined Dortmund on loan and has since spent the last four full seasons there as a key player. He has 34 Germany caps including six appearances in 2023 but has not been named in Germany's provisional squad for Euro 2024, nor have Dortmund team-mates Hummels or Julian Brandt.

The second player is Marco Reus, once heavily linked with Liverpool and for whom this will be his final Dortmund appearance. The 34-year-old forward has spent 12 years at Dortmund having been signed by Klopp from Borussia Monchengladbach and is bound for the MLS having held talks with St. Louis City about a move.

His former team-mate Roman Burki, another who played under Klopp, plays there.
