Lower Tiers - ADV Doubles - Quick Claw BANNED (2024)

my thoughts on the above:

I really enjoy ADV DOU because I think the decision trees you get in this metagame work differently than a lot of other doubles formats. There are absolutely turns, particularly turn 1 permutations of lati/gar/gross leads, where there are equally likely plays and commits are rewarded way more than midgrounds since removing one of these pokemon is huge value. I had hoped the latias ban would reduce the strain on these situations but that isn't what happened and for now there cannot be steps to undermine the suspect process. A big complaint earlier on was thunder wave, and while it's still super viable, its impact during ADVPL was definitely minimized, so we'll just have to see where the next tour takes us.

With that said, I wanted to post a teamdump in hopes to inspire some development. I went 5-1 in ADVPL and I think the philosophy I wanted to emphasize throughout the tournament was using fast teams with powerful leads to gain early advantages and not squander them. You can see this play out in every team I brought and I don't think this philosophy will really change moving forward.

Week 1 vs Z Strats (W)

I had not played ADV DOU seriously in a tournament setting ever before heading into this game. I sat out the money tour and ALTPL so I was coming in to this relatively blind. I theorized that HP Fire + Psychic Latias gave the best chance of pressuring all of the tier's big 3 and Metagross would be a better partner than Gengar as it puts more pressure on Latias and can Protect. Tauros was a pokemon that was almost nonexistant the last time I took this tier seriously but I saw some enthusiasts speak highly of it and I wasn't disappointed. I also added Starmie as I was looking for something to give me an edge on all the 110s. In game I manage to take an early lead and then perfectly punish Z Strats's Explosion, and in the end I'm able to find the kill on Snorlax to close the game. Having Lum Zapdos would've made the endgame even easier, so that would be a suggestion for improvement.

Week 2 vs Spitfire Arcanine (W)

Pretty similar team to the one I used week 1 as I was convinced there wasn't a ton wrong with it. I went Swampert to have a better matchup into his high amount of Tyranitar usage from previous tours and decided to swap Zapdos to Raikou so I'd once again have an ace in the 110s matchup. Other than some minor EV spread improvements, the 4 returning Pokemon stayed the same. In game I always made the effort to double up on the more threatening pokemon and just never found myself punished for it. My big misplay in this game was probably revealing Raikou when I could've just went Tauros in the end.

Week 3 vs BIG WILL (L)

Honestly I had no clue what to expect from BIG WILL, he'd been subbed into the slot as Mako slotted to OU after starting 0-2, but I figured it would just be SEA and/or xrn building/passing so I needed to make sure I used something a little new to throw off their scout. I opted for Gengar to the lead this time around with back Metagross. Zapdos now has a Lum Berry because I learned how this tier works, and that's the only change from previous sets. I opted for DD Tyranitar because I realized how much of a menace it was in this tier and often it actually gets the room to set up and sweep, not to mention the abundance of EQ partners make setting up pins a breeze. My crucial error in this game is on turn 3, where I arrogantly assume my Metagross is faster than Will's and opt to attack the left slot instead with Latias. Had I just HP Fire'd the Metagross, My own Metagross's health would be preserved and Raikou would still eat an EQ if it switched or something would take it in Metagross's slot thanks to ADV switch mechanics. This blunder costs me immensely as I can't find enough damage on Raikou to close the game.

Week 4 vs Memoric (W)

Team name is insanely accurate, as in I literally just hit copy in the Showdown teambuilder and added Raikou over Zapdos. Since this is a Tyranitar team I decided to opt for HP Grass to hit Swamperts. Memoric hits me with a pretty rough lead MU, but I figure sacrificing Gengar for Latias is a solid trade. Unfortunately Memo said it was a speed tie, and I made the play with the genuine assumption that he, like myself, wouldn't be running max speed Latias as to not tie with his own Gengar, so if it really was I do apologize as I think this was probably the biggest impact of RNG I got in the tour. Raikou and Starmie are able to weaponize their speed advantage to clean the matchup from here.

Week 5 vs ArciticBreeze (W)

I put a lot of effort into Arctic's scout because I wanted to get the best record in the pool. That being said our team was locked for playoffs at this point so I decided to get a little experimental. I felt like Raikou + Steelix kind of put a lot of pressure on all of his picks except for his high pert usage, so I opted for Exeggutor, the highest Special Attack of any Grass type in the tier. Also it has base 90 attack Explosion! In game I'm met with Arcanine + Celebi which definitely owns my usual Latias + Gross/Gar leads so I'm glad I switched it up. I get decent mileage out of Gengar's Explosion but my Steelix being met with a Starmie is super bad news bears. Arctic makes a great play and punishes my switch with a boom from Snorlax, putting me at a 3-4 disadvantage. However, I get Starmie and Exeggutor in facing Gengar and Starmie so overall I'm pretty happy. In the endgame I'm really glad I covered for his Arcanine getting the double by going to Steelix, as hitting the following Hydro Pump is enough to win me the game.

For the first time this tour I went into a match without a Water or Electric. I decided I was going to bring the big 3 and simply bait will into using DD Tyranitar since he had success with it vs me in tests, only to come in hot with the Sceptile, which outspeeds even 252 Jolly Ttar at +1. I decided to also use Snorlax because I hadn't all tour and it could help check special offense pretty well. I didn't really find any of Lax's attacks super droppable so I just decided to run all 4. Return > Body Slam because everything has lum berry now. The turn 1 crit looks a little sour but since I mished Mash on Will's Metagross we're pretty much where we would've been without it. Turn 2 I confidently go for the Metagross EQ war now that my Gross is Jolly and I'm rewarded for it big time. I successfully get Tyranitar in and sacrifice pieces to have it and Gengar stare down Will's slower board, but I'm also a met with a Sceptile mirror which I think is hilarious. In the end though I find the pin first and finish the tour 5-1 as my team didn't reach the finals.

With the conclusion of the tour and Latias remaining legal, I'll also drop my VR.
