Surfers like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning, among many others, usually come to mind. These are the surfers who get paid to followthe competitive circuit around the world, surng various events for large amountsof cash prizes and rating points. Thesesurfers are highly skilled in a specic form ofsurng and ride waves according to a strictlyregulated judging criteria. They are welltrained and extremely disciplined athletes ofOlympic standards who are given short 20- to30-minute heats to showcase their top-classrepertoire of modern surng maneuvers.

They are the equivalent of surng’s sport stars. Some are millionaires, drive ashy cars, hangout with super models, and get invited to allthe coolest parties.

Although this is the most obvious example ofprofessional surng, it is also, in many ways, the most unrealistic and least achievable. There are only 36 spots available on the WorldTour. For any grom with a serious intentionof being a lifelong surng professional, this iscertainly not the easiest of options.

A m i n i m a l i s t g u i d e t o c l o s e t

A clean and organized closet can give youpeace of mind and save you time and money, according to experts. However, we tend toclutter those closets with clothes that don’t t,linens, tax records and anything else we wantout of sight.

“We wear about 80 percent of our clothes 20percent of the time,” says Tracy McCubbin, owner of dCluttery in Los Angeles. When theclothes pile up, it reaches the point whereyou don’t even want to open your closet door.According to Adele Mahan, owner of FreshStart Transitions in Charlotte, North Carolina, that’s when people give up on the closet andstart dumping clothes on a chair, opening therest of the home to clutter.

Consider these helpful hints to get your closetin tip-top shape before it overows into therest of your house.

In 1913, a year before the First World Warbegan, The Wine Society of the U. publisheda ‘brief history of the origin and development’of the society, telling how, in 1874, anexhibition including food and drinks at theRoyal Albert Hall slipped up. Apparently, ‘avery large quantity of wine in the wood wassent from various countries and was storedin the cellars of the Royal Albert Hall, where itentirely escaped notice from visitors.’

Wine producers from Portugal, ‘who hadtaken great pains and incurred considerableexpense in the preparation of their exhibits,’felt slighted that their wine was, in eect, stored and forgotten. They contacted theirgovernment who discussed the scenario withthe British Foreign Oce. Together they cameup with an unocial plan. General H.Y.Scott, architect of Albert Hall, ‘should givea series of large luncheon parties at SouthKensington, and that the wines from thecellars should be placed on the table.’

Some lunch guests purchased several wines, then formed a wine club before attendinga similar second and third lunch. Salesincreased. A legally termed ‘Friendly Society’was formed, elections and annual meetingsensued, and minutes were recorded.

Once the shopping is complete bagthe best seat in the house at thecharming and relaxed café Chez Felix, where you can grab an espresso, sitand watch the world go by and spylocals stocking up for a long weekendlunch. A wonderful bar in which tohave a pre-dinner snack and glassof wine, or to while away summerevenings with plates of locallysourced charcuterie and cheese.

The Ontario shores of Lake Huron stretch morethan 300 kilometres from Sarnia to Tobermory.More than 25 beach communities and towns dotthe coast, each with their own personality.

As children, my two sisters and I lived for theannual summer “family beach day” on LakeHuron, one of three Great Lakes we can ee to inSouthern Ontario. I have sand-caked memoriesof sunny weekends and turquoise waters at thebeaches of Port Elgin, Kincardine and Goderich, just three hours northwest of Toronto. Those daysfelt like they would never end – lled with epicsand castles, elaborate water games and divingthrough cresting waves. For many years, I’vereturned to the soft sand beaches of my childhoodto while away the day with a book, surroundedby the sounds of seagulls squabbling over Frenchfries, waves lapping at the shore and music carriedon the cool lake breeze.

For sheer drama, it’s hard to beat this widearc of sand located on the Atlantic justseven minutes from Cape Town. Walking along Bermuda’s famous crescent-shaped Horseshoe Bay Beach, or even on thecli-top trails above it, is a sightseeing must.Named for the shape of its inviting bay, thisscenic beach in Southampton parish is perfectfor lazy sunning or playful splashing (you canrent towels, boogie boards and snorkel gear).During Bermuda’s cooler months (Novemberto March), Horseshoe Bay remains popular asvisitors snap photos of its pale-pink sand andgrab a co*cktail and snacks at the on-site café.One caveat: Expect crowds when cruise shipsare in port.

Last-minute accommodations can be achallenge in a beach town since people tendto book by the week, and in advance. Broadenyour search to local motels, inns, bed-and-breakfasts or Airbnb. Better still, toss yourtent in the car and book a site at one of veprovincial parks located along the lake thatoer camping. Dozens of private campgroundsand several conservation areas providediverse options. Stay exible and you will ndsomething to suit your needs.

At the big beaches, be prepared to contendwith crowded parking – arrive early to ndyour perfect spot in the sand. For quieter, more rugged beaches, check out Goderich,Bayeld, Port Albert or Southampton.

####### THE HOOKUP CULTURE

The scene: a college bar on a Friday night. Onone side of the bar is Chelsea, a junior outdrinking for a girl’s night. That night, Chelseawill make a connection with a guy she runsinto from her chem lab. They’ll talk all nightand after a few drinks, will make their wayback to his place. Chelsea will wake up in hisbed the next morning. She will be called a“slu*t” or a “whor*” for sleeping with a guy thatshe isn’t in a relationship with.

Every generation has had its own version ofdating. In recent years, dating has taken a turnfor the worse. In fact, dating almost feels non-existent. That only applies if you dene datingthe way it should be dened: two people whospend time together and get to know eachother. Most recently, a terrible thing has beengrowing more and more popular: “Netix andchill.” WTH l is “Netix and chill?” Some usethis as a replacement for dating, of which thisgeneration has forgotten the fundamentals.

The “Hook-Up Culture” is great for somepeople. Serious relationships don’t t intoevery person’s busy schedule. Perhaps, somepeople haven’t found a person that theyfeel strongly enough about to commit to.Others nd comfort in the stability of havinga boyfriend or a girlfriend. Neither of thesethings is wrong – they’re right for the peoplethey’re right for.

What one person chooses to do with their lifeis none of your concern. The only person whocan decide what you need is you. As long asChelsea is happy once she gets home fromher classmate’s house and as long as Todd ishappy with his girlfriend, we should behappy too.
