    Return hits the hardest for me. I get Frustation getting cut. It's requirements for power can be undone by walking. But why Return? It provided a great STAB option for non Guts Normal types. Now they have to rely on Double Edge's recoil, Body Slam which....isn't too bad I guess or (unfortunately for Stoutland) Facade which again is basically a handicap for anyone without Guts. In games where they force the Affection mechanic on you, why is the move who's power is based on how much your mon loves you not in them.

    A lot of these losses stink because these moves are what Pokemon use before they get the big boy moves. Before Bug Buzz, you get Signal Beam. Before Flash Cannon you get Mirror Shot.

    • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (14)

      @bulborb87565 месяцев назад +54

      i still think Signal Beam should have stayed, 75 power is serviceable with its confusion chance, plus it was a nice coverage move for other types like psychic if they didn't have access to shadow ball and/or dark pulse

    • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (15)

      @thundereagle41304 месяца назад +4

      Signal Beam could be learned by a lot of non-bug pokemon while Bug Buzz is literally exclusive to bug type Pokemon. Maybe it wasn't a competitive homestay. But for playtroughs it was a really great move. Unfortunately it was a tutor move most of it's existence.
      I think if Signal Beam was TM it would've been used more in regular playtroughs.

    Assist has actually been used to help Skitty and Delcatty to win a tournament. It was a niche doubles format where players played in a pair with each player having 3 Pokemon, Prankster boosted Assist was used to call Dark Void from a Smeargle while the Cats' partner set up sun with Houndoom and used Sun boosted fire moves.

    • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (26)

      @demi-femme48215 месяцев назад +8

      There's also the infamous Divecats, wherein Purrloin and Liepard would use Prankster Assist to call for Dive. This was so hard to stop that Game Freak actually changed how Assist works to prevent them from calling partial invicibility moves.

    • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (27)

      @Lankpants4 месяца назад

      Since assist's flags still exist in the game's data we can tell that one of the moves assist can legally pull is Revival Blessing. Turns out people didn't like Liepard priority revive looping its zombie team.

    I would argue that Jump Kick being excluded is just as bad as the reason for Signal Beam. Yes both moves have a better move that can be used (Hi-Jump Kick and Bug Buzz), but not many non fighting types can learn Hi-Jump Kick. Whereas a lot of non fighting types can learn Jump Kick, such as Sawsbuck and Dodrio. And the latter really benefitted in Gen 7 singles because it finally had good coverage against rock and steel types, and a really good move at that. I hope it gets reintroduced somehow someday, this poor bird is probably stuck being walled by rock and steel types again when it comes back next month in the indigo disk

    • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (30)

  • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (31)

    @NotAnElk5 месяцев назад +30

    I think something people tend to gloss over about a lot of bad moves is that the player isn't the only one using them. An advantage of some moves being bad is that the enemy AI might choose them and help an inexperienced player get out of a sticky situation.
    (I also think this is the reason so many movesets suck in particularly the first 3 gens. The opponent doesn't get to have strong moves, whereas the player does due to TM's)

    Pursuit, Signal beam, jump kick and hidden power were easily my least favourite removals for different reasons.
    Ghost types have been getting way out of hand and pursuit helped keep them in Check, Signal beam was good coverage for several mons and was the mid game bridge between infestation and bug buzz, and Jump kick meanwhile provided a lot of coverage for mons like Rapidash and Sawsbuck who desperately needed the strong coverage and don’t have high jump kick.
    And hidden power was the only form of decent coverage for some of my fav mons like Sceptile, but I get that one because of stuff like Regilecki and Shadow rider Calyrex. Though I wouldn’t mind Tera blast getting a slight rework to function as a hidden power 2.0 but with a reworked availability so those previously mentioned mons don’t get it and physical attackers can get that coverage

  • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (51)

    @PeterGriffin115 месяцев назад +5

    Another thing worth noting about Hidden Power is that in BDSP & Legends Arceus the move works differently. In both those games Hidden Power changes it's type to be super affective agaisnt the Pokémon your fighting so for example if your battling a fairy type Hidden Power will be Poison or Steel type or if your fighting a Poison type Hidden Power will be Ground or Psychic type. Due to how broken and overpowered they made Hidden Power in those games that's probably why it's a move only Unown's can learn now. Plus Unown has horrible stats so giving it a broken move at least helps it a little bit.

      I'm not sure but given my conjecture based on my knowledge of competitive meta and whatnot, I wouldn't be surprised is Power Up Punch was cut simply because of how much it benefited Mega Kangaskhan in the time it was a thing. Honestly, wouldn't mind if they did that. Especially if TMs stay craftable and single use. If hidden power comes back they would need to make sure you can see the type it is BEFORE you actually teach it because... Yeah testing hidden power back then, especially with it based on an base IVs I believe? A bit of a hassle

    • Pokemon's Lost Moves EXPLAINED (63)

      @user-oy2zg3bt6n5 месяцев назад +3

      honestly i think both systems need to be combined and rebooted.
      hidden power's method of changing types is messy and outdated, while terra blast is too reliant on the terrastylze gimmick to even exist, without that gimmick it's a special move with 80 BP with normal type.
      IMO they should combine to make one move none reliant on the gimmick, 60 BP like normal HP (as a downside for versatility but a buff for technician users) but instead of basing the darn typing using IVs there will be a new "stat" of sort that will link with the terrastyle gimmick by essentially being it's replacement for other regions.
      (imagine terra typing, but you can't terrastylize instead it just picks your HP type and your terrastyle type in gen 9 where the gimmick exists)
      it will have a that stat that makes it so the attack is physical or special depending on if the pokemon has higher attack or SPA, but it will always be on, regardless of the state of a gimmick.

    For the Eternatus point, either because TPC accidentally dug themselves into a hole or wanted to justify Dynamax being a one-time thing, they said in game that Dynamaxing was exclusive to Galar because of what happened there centuries ago. Megas have been shown to exist outside Kalos in ORAS from Rayquaza breaking a meteor and SM/USUM via importing them, and Z Crystals, though bits of Necrozma, arent stated to be locked to Alola or short in numbers (Guzma has a chest full of Buginium Z Crystals).
    Since Eternatus uses its own variation of Dynamaxing for Eternabeam, it would need to be able to tap into that energy that only exists in Galar.

On your comment about copy/pasting code, it could be that Sword and Shield uses a different programming language compared to earlier Pokemon games, meaning that copy/pasting the code wouldn't work. Alternatively, there could have been some changes to how moves were handled in SwSh compared to previous games that, again, would make copy/pasting the code not work in its intended way.

    Assist is bad?
    Liepard has used it to:
    -Win in VGC with Priority Dark Void, and is part of why the move itself being limited to Darkrai
    -Become immortal, resulting in an extension in the ban list on moves it can call.
    -Raise the Dead, completely ruining Natdex AG, alongside Shedinja completely walling whatever the hell it wants.

Even with the fact that is was an important coverage option for a lot of Pokémon, it also acted as important move progression for special attacking bugs. Now bug has the same problem that fire used to have with Pokémon having ember until they got flamethrower. Now special bugs just have struggle bug until bug buzz. I think Hidden Power can stay gone. It was immediately made very dated once the physical/special split happened in gen 4 anyways. With it being made exclusively special, that left physical attackers in the cold. And then gen 6 came along and they couldn’t add Fairy to Hidden Power due to how it correlated to a Pokémon’s IVs. I think Tera Blast would be a good replacement going forward. It can be both physical & special, and even once Terastalization is gone they can still keep the tera type system and have Tera Blast pull from that, independent from IVs, quite literally creating Hidden Power 2.0. This would also solve a lot of coverage issues, like you mentioned earlier with Signal Beam, without having to sacrifice your stats for a specific HP type.

    maybe sky drop was weak, but it was real good, with the right strat. i remember.
    1. puting toxic on an opponent. then using eather venoshok or protect, also had psychic and earthquake in case of poison or steel type. in truth most of my team was weak. they eather killed fast or were killed fast. my skydrop user was using roost and could resist really well. that was the team prep.
    2. was first checking for any steel/poison possibilities. they were targeted fast. any other mons were toxic. once the steel/poison were down, most of my team also was. between the sky drop and the protect, the few mons remaining were killed easy.
    what seemed like an easy win for my opponent, soon turned into an incredibly hard fight. among all those i faced, only a few managed to beat me. no shame in that. they definitely deserved that win. i think it was in omega ruby, my skydrop user being tornadus (i think). i think i even used stealth rock once or twice. to say he choosed a mega charizard. should have choosed his mega to be swampert instead.
