Temperatures set to plunge below zero but sunshine to return for bank holiday (2024)

Temperatures are set to plunge below freezing over the next few nights, resulting in mist and fog in many areas, but there are “encouraging signs” that fine weather will return for the forthcoming bank holiday.

This weekend will see a mix of sunny spells and showers before heavier rain moves in from the west on Sunday night and looks likely to persist into the early days of next week.

However, there are tentative signs that better weather could be in store for the May bank holiday weekend as a result of “high-pressure dominance” over Ireland, according to Met Éireann.

Alan O’Reilly, the man behind the Carlow Weather account on X (formerly Twitter), also said he “remains positive” about the outlook for the bank holiday.

“Unsettled few days with risk of some heavier rain early next week but encouraging signs towards the end of it and into the bank holiday,” he wrote. “Still a long way [to go] but I remain positive with some hope of a decent long weekend.”

In the meantime, there are some cold nights in store this weekend with temperatures dropping to as low as -1C with mist, fog, and a risk of frost in many places.

Here’s the latest forecast for the coming days from Met Éireann:

Friday

Rain will linger in the south at first this morning with cloudy conditions there. Brighter elsewhere before cloud builds and showers move into the north through the morning. Some sunny spells for the afternoon and evening with well scattered showers, some heavy. The best of the sunshine will be in the east later on. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in a light to moderate northeasterly breeze.

Showers will die away early on tonight with long clear spells following. Cold with lowest temperatures of -1 to 3 degrees and a touch of frost. Patches of mist and fog may form in light northerly breezes.

Saturday

Starting off cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain in the east and southeast but mainly dry with spells of sunshine elsewhere. Rain will clear the southeast early in the afternoon. Otherwise, Saturday will be a cool day with a mix of sunny spells and scattered April showers feeding in over the country, in a light to moderate northeasterly breeze. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees, mildest in the west.

Any showers dying out and becoming mainly dry and chilly on Saturday night with clear spells in a light northwest or variable breeze. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with some grass frost forming where it’s coolest in the north.

Sunday

Sunny spells and scattered showers feeding in from the west through the day. Cloud will build from the Atlantic towards evening. Fairly cool again with highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light northwest to west winds.

Scattered showers easing for time with cloud continuing to increase from the Atlantic overnight. Outbreaks of rain developing in the west and spreading eastwards overnight. Some locally heavy falls on higher ground in the west and southwest. Light to moderate winds backing southerly with lowest air temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees. Occasional mist.

Monday

A wet and cloudy day Monday. Widespread outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, will spread across the whole country through the morning. Showers will follow the clearance in the west through the evening. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees. Mainly moderate southerly winds will ease light and veer westerly following the clearance of the rain.

Rain will clear eastwards through the night but will linger on eastern coasts. Scattered showers elsewhere with some clearer spells. Mist and fog patches possible also. Lowest air temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees. Light southerly winds.

Tuesday

Current indications suggest another wet day Tuesday with further spells of rain, heavy at times in the south. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with light to moderate west to southwest winds.
